Battle lines have been drawn between Zimbabwe's embattled President Robert Mugabe and the Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono after the central bank chief blasted Mugabe's claims that Zimbabwe's economic meltdown is a result of sanctions imposed on the country by the West.

In a bold bench mark departure from the official political line Gono accused Mugabe and his ZANU PF government of running the economy down by embarking on disastrous policies, turning a blind eye on rampant corruption within the ruling party ranks and incompetence on the part of cabinet ministers.
"The issue of the country's economic meltdown cannot be blamed on sanctions, it cannot be blamed on leaders of Western countries, it cannot be blamed on anyone outside this country.
The problem rests squarely on the shoulders of Government", said the central bank governor while addressing a public lecture at Midlands State University in Gweru last Thursday.
Gono accused Mugabe's government of failing to implement turn around strategies proffered by the central bank and other stakeholders because of its "lack of seriousness and political will to see the turn around of the national economy".
Mugabe has been on record on several occasions blaming the country's current economic meltdown on his political detractors in the opposition and sanctions imposed by the West.
The ageing Mugabe who has ruled the country since independence in 1980 has refused to accept blame for the poor performance of the country's economy always pointing at British and American leaders Tony Blair and George Bush and accusing them of sabotaging Zimbabwe's economy in order to effect regime change.
But Gono who seemed to be singing a new political tune last week dismissed Mugabe's claims saying the West has nothing to do with Zimbabwe's economic meltdown.
Instead Gono blamed the chaotic land reform program, rampant corruption within government, and poor policies by government as the major causes of the economic meltdown adding that those tasked with the responsibility of running government ministries and the land reform program had proved incompetent.
The central bank governor questioned the prudence of Mugabe's decision to unilaterally withdraw the country's membership from the Commonwealth as well as antagonizing Western governments at a time when the country was in dire need of foreign currency injections from friendly Western countries.
Gono also indicated that the Look East Policy was fast proving to be a monumental flop as it was failing to deliver the desired results.
The bold statements by Gono against Mugabe come when sources close to the central bank governor say Gono is now impatient with Mugabe because of his penchant for political expediency at the expense of pragmatic economics.
Sources close to Gono and the ruling ZANU PF party say Gono was hoping that ZANU PF's central committee was going to deal decisively with Mugabe's costly political brinkmanship by choosing a new presidential candidate for ZANU PF in 2008' presidential elections.
"After the central committee's endorsement of Mugabe's candidature in the 2008 election Gono has given up on his quiet diplomacy and has decided to speak out albeit risking his survival as central bank chief", said one source
Sources close to the Reserve Bank Governor have also revealed to ZimDaily that the central bank chief strongly believes that Mugabe must go if the country is to be saved from further economic decline.
Gono is said to believe strongly that Mugabe and his hard line stance against the West is the major stumbling block in his efforts to turn around the national economy.
With the rate of inflation above 1700 and an unemployment rate of over 80 percent Zimbabwe is now a basket case with millions of people requiring international food aid.
The chaotic and frequently violent land reform program launched by Mugabe 7 years ago has disrupted commercial farming in a country which is essentially agro-based.
Mugabe's critics in the opposition insist that Mugabe is to blame for the country's economic crisis and have called on him to give up power to a new leader.
The beleaguered Mugabe has responded by unleashing a terror campaign against his critics in order to silence them.
It is yet to be seen how Mugabe well known for his vindictiveness and detest for criticism is going to deal with Gono's latest utterances.

please muongorori explain what you mean. how has he shown to be such "duzvi"I would have thought if he was such a patron of mugabe he would not have uttered these words. my question is does he have the ability to run this economy given the right enviroment. no point in saying he is a duzvi without expanding your thought. I am interested in your ideas not expletives

Gono
Gono was jus used the way Jonathan Moyo was. The issue of money loving people like Jonathan Moyo and Gideon Gono have made Mugabe to stay in office. Today Moyo is just wuffling on his articles whilst he is the very person who blocked change in 2000. Nw Gono with his turn around initiatives hapana kwaaisvika. He cause more harm, killing the financial services sector by chasing away competant bankers kuvengana nenyaya dzavo dzekutorerana pfambi. So, he must go quitely than seeking clearance through saying obvious things know by a Grade 7 fellow.

The Zim situation is obvious
Guys, lets not beat around the bush. Mugabe has lost his support from the cabinet. When those ministers are alone in their chambers, they know and say how badly Mugabe has terrorised the economy. They just cant face the old man to say it. They dont have the balls to speak up. The reason being that they turn to lose more when they turn against mugabe. They have benefited a lot from the mis-managing of state funds. They have acquiered a lot of assets so they cant just turn around and say "Mugabe, you fcked up big time bro" Most of them are also afraid to risk their lives. They know how Mugabe treats his opposers. Its not easy for these so called ministers guys. Having said, Mr Gono sees no future in Zanu. He is still young and its no surprise that he says these allegations now. He can see that the ship is sinking. He feels that he has a role to play in our New Zimbabwe to come. Who knows, we might need his expetise.

Feeling the wind
IS Gono just testing the wind now? Has he presidential hopes? Can we trust anyone from the regime? I suppose we all grasp at any straw of hope in this terrible situation, but has Gono got the strength to take on the fury of Mugabe?

Gono is a looter
Gono is a looter. This guy is on a Government salary. Before that he was on a bank's salary. Yet he builds mansions in Zimbabwe and Austrailia and buys 5 expensive cars. His maids stole hundreds of US dollars and he did not ven know that the money had been stolen until the police had told him. This apparently had been going on for a considerable length of time. He is the custodian of Government coffers. It begs then who shall guard the guards? We will be able to calculate how much of his money is loot that is easy. What happened to FAIR DEAL? Gono told the farmers that asked to be paid a reasonable price for their tobacco that they can have their tobacco and hge would keep his exchange rate. He is business friendly. In short Gono is a thief and all he desires to steal more. If the cake is bigger he can cream even more.

inonzi fair deal iyoyo
Dont be fooled by Gono's antics. As the opportunist he is, he is now trying to protect what he truly cares for... his children. After this fair deal campaign which the likes of John Howard are now seriously considering, Gono has realised that to save his skin (or that of his kids in Australia) he has to categorically denounce Mugabe's sanctions mantra so that he can gain sympathy from the western governments and thus have his kids spared the boot. Zimbabweans should not let themselves be distracted by opportunists, we have had a multitude of them in Mutumwa Mawere, Jonathan Moyo etc. Lets keep up the pressure, our fair deal campaign is beginning to bear fruits already and we should not be swayed by mercenaries like Gono who not only have been disasters to our economy but have used their influence to fund the monstrosity killing our beautiful country.

Gono must resign
Gono must resign he is conflicting himself. Maybe the fair deal campaign is now getting to these guys. He is the main architect of murambatsvina as he was announcing it , it was happening already in the streets. Anoruma achifuridzira. Gono is a governor and must have remained like other governors in the past but he wants more than governor so he must resign and run as MP in 2008 or form his own party and run 2008. This is the worst governor we have had, when he took over the exchange rate was 55 to the US today it is 25million . No,NO, NO, this guy must go and leave office and just sign checks from CBZ for grace and mugabe as before.

Gono for president
Gono hapana zvaatadza.Infact if it wasnt for Gono who tried so hard to save the country since 2003,where would we be now?He tried but is let down by lack of political will.If u were Governor of Reserve bank, waisatenga mota dzakanaka here iwewe?Musavengere munhu mari yake,he is Governor fo crying out loud.Iwe usangoti Gono iduzvi..taura mafacts.Gono is economic minded and thats the president we need nw,not war veteran minded!

Genius Zimdaily
Zimdaily payakatanga fair deal, most people were skeptical. But within days the results are already there for all to see. As clearly stated, the objective was that by going for the kids of top gvt officials, they would be forced to either distance tthemselves from the murderous regime to save their kids/families's much loved life in the west. Gono happens to be the first victim of the fair deal campaign and he is now frantic to distance himself from sekuru matibiri's frivolity as fast as possible before John Howard decides to post P,P&P Gono back to lovely zim in the blink of an eye. Like I said, Zimdaily you are a genius, keep turning the screws on these hypocrits.

Mugabe Outwits Them All
Mugabe lures with money, gets the person to advance his entrenched position, gets the work done and once the result is positive dumps the person. Think of Jonathan Moyo, Munyaradzi Hwengwere, Kuruneri, Enos Nkala, Gabriel Shumba, etc. Gono might be on the way. Sikhanyiso Ndhlovu and William Nhara will follow. By the time a person discovers he/she is being used, it will be too late. By blaming Mugabe now, Gono is cleansing his CV. That is a counter now. One person who refused to be used was Nkosana Moyo. He is a man of vision, even money could not buy his ethics.

Sir
Niggas to say Gono is economic minded is as good as sayin Sekuru is Economicaly minded. smell the coffee work up than dreaming gono for president. The man was driving a lexxus at cbz and when he got the job at rbz all he did was loot and please his paymasters by uncontrolled quasi fiscal expenditure to finance border gezi camps, the cosmetic hlalani kuhle housing schemes and the importation of fuel to be sold on uneconomic rates.

Gono is 100% right
You have a mentality which is unprogressive. The "dear Leader Mentality" That is why even in parliament those mps just let some bills pass when they know they are wrong (I will miss Zvobgo), they can not challenge their masters. To hell with that. Gono is one of a few. I can see you would never criticise your leaders just coz they are leaders. They are falliable and if they miss a point must be told openly. Viva critics of policies.

Gono
He is as guilty as Mugabe and the entire cabinet for plunging Zim in this disgusting financial mess. Gono, Mugabe and his entire followers including some of you who write good about mugabe on this forum have always known that the western countries or sanctions have nothing to do with the problems we are currently facing. These people have been pleasing themselves with lies that they would rule the country forever!! Hakuna zvakadaro. Zanu never believed one day the children of Zimbabwe would wake up from the deep slumber we were in. Now we have woken up with the help of editors like zimdaily and all those fighting the battle back home, now Gono is shaken. If he is with us, let him announce his immediate resignation, otherwise, lets not be fooled he is more guilty than mugabe because he allowed mugabe to use him to pilfer the country's money. Gentleman, every little bit of anti-mugabe is helping. Pamberi ne Hondo yerusununguko.

Adziya moto wembavha imbavha
A man of honour will never willingly submit to te whims of an oppressor and when men of honour (like Nkosana Moyo) realise that they are being used for political expediency they do not hesitate to quit. The fact that someone else will immediately fill the void that they leave behind is irrelevant and only helps to distinguish between honourable professionals and opportunists. It is these opportunists that fill up top gvt positions in this day (in particular Gono and all the current cabinet ministers) and the reason that they are staying in those positions to destabilize the regime from within is mischevious, silly and brings to mind the experience of one of the biggest opportunists of our time i.e. Jonathan Moyo. These people remain in these positions only for self serving reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the greater national good. Whether they decide to stay put or not the people of zimbabwe are going to liberate themselves and will call to account all those responsible for the slide of their beautiful country into abyss.

A gift to Zimbabwe
Here is a present from me to Zimbabwe: Tell Gono and Mugabe to decree the following and they will turn around the Zimbabwe economy at absolutely no cost: Pass a law in parliament or let Gono issue a legal decree that all transactions in Zimbabwe have to be done at the parallel rate, that all non-monetary items have to be updated at the parallel rate every time the parallel rate changes and remove all gazetted prices. As simple as that. No cost at all. Zero cost. Zilch. Simply a signature on a decree or law. That will turn around the whole Zim economy overnight - at no cost. Just a simple law or RBZ decree. It will stabalize the whole Zim economy overnight. The Zim economy will start growing immediately and as long as that decree or law is in place the Zim economy will not stop growing. The same can be done as follow: Float the ZimDollar rate; everybody (from Mugabe to Gono to every man in the street) in Zim to do all transactions at this single rate, update all non-monetary items at the single rate every time it changes and remove gazetted prices. This will turn the Zim economy around at no costs. Nicolaas Smith www.RealValueAccounting.com realvalueaccounting@yahoo.com

Ask Simba Makoni what happened to him when he tried to give mr matibili that advice back in 2002. Textbook economics na matibili are like zanu pf and democracy ... incompatible!!
Posted By : Apr 12 2007 11:00 AM
This is not "textbook economics"
Where do you get "textbook economics" from my advice? This is common street or bush economics. I learnt this in Angola´s streets 11 years ago when inflation was 3200% and we had ZERO percent inflation in our company in non-monetary items because we updated all non-monetary items at the parallel rate every time the parallel rate changed. Our workers´ salaries, our selling prices, taxes, everything were updated at the parallel rate - every time it changed. This is not "textbook" economics. This is street economics or African bush economics learnt the hard way in Angola´s hyperinflationary economy. Nicolaas Smith www.RealValueAccounting.com realvalueaccounting@yahoo.com

ndizvo shamwari; gono has done nothing good for the entire zimbabweans. he is as good as his master mugabe and their accomplices (so called PARTNERS IN CRIME). he also contributed to this sickening economical crisis, wasting resources by paying those who brutalise symphathizers of the major opposition party.

More Polotical than Economics
I would like to believe that Mr Smith's advice is practical, only that we are dealing with more of a political crisis than an economical one.It only takes people who understand not the Matibili's we have.

the truth abt Gono
Having worked closely with both Matibiri and Gono up until last year, I think Gono is not changing his political tune but just making it public. He is one person who was convinced he could bring change by pursuading Bob - something which he managed to do several times. When we thot devaluation was the answer he manged to do it - simply by not calling it devaluation - etc. The man tried and in as much as he sacrified toher pple in the process and had kept himself close to Bob inorder to influence policy. I salute him for staying on. Even though he had to loot to keep up with inflation also.... GONO MURUME, i think if Simba Makoni was equally politically skillful they could make a brilliant combination. Forget about Bob

Source of Article
Where did you get this information from? I am not suggesting that it's not accurate or true, but I just checked with a reliable source at home and his reply was "he [Gono] would not stay there if he said anything like that". My source is a pretty important person and he doesn't even know Gono has said this.
